Coffee and donuts are always a good way to start the day, and United Way of Eastern New Mexico volunteers are hoping it will be a good way to start their annual campaign as well.
UWENM will have its fall kick-off in Portales from 7-9 a.m. today, with free coffee and donuts on the square. UWENM Executive Director Erinn Burch says the kick-off is a great way for people to learn more about the organization and catch the enthusiasm behind the fund-raiser.
With coffee supplied by Sodexho and donuts furnished by Daylight Donuts, the event will also feature a live radio remote, a chance to visit with local United Way board members and Portales Mayor Orlando Ortega.
Campaign chairman Leo Lovett says it will be a time of celebration as well as a kick-off to the year’s campaign. He stresses the good that the organization does for the community.
“United Way, it’s our United Way,” Lovett said. “One hundred percent of what you give stays in our community.”
Burch said the overall goal for UWENM is $525,385, an increase of 9 percent over last year. She said that the goal for Roosevelt County remains the same as last year at $70,000.
“We got close last year but didn’t make it,” she said of Roosevelt County’s campaign. “We’re going to try and top it this year.”
Burch said things are already rolling with the campaign as the Portales Municipal Schools have already received $7,700 in pledges during the pre-kick-off drive and they still aren’t done with their campaign. She praised both the Portales and Clovis school systems for stepping to the plate last year and being among the top contributors. She noted that
Portales Municipal Schools doubled their contribution last year over the previous campaign.
“It looks like they’re poised to meet or beat what they did last year,” Burch said.
