PUEBLO, Colo — Yusuke Ota’s second goal of the game with about 13 minutes left lifted Colorado State-Pueblo to a 3-2 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Sunday in men’s soccer.
Ota converted an ENMU turnover in its defensive zone and took it in solo on goalkeeper Leif Craddock, breaking a 2-2 tie in the 77th minute.
Sophomore forward Jared Morris gave the Hounds (2-8-1) a 2-1 lead when he took the ball at Pueblo keeper Arturo Moranchel and beat him to the left corner for his fifth goal of the season early in the second half. The goal tied the school record, set by Jonathan Holman and Albert Robertson during the 2004 campaign.
Senior Keith Vargas scored on a penalty kick in the 11th minute to stake ENMU to a 1-0 lead. That held up until Ota knocked in a free kick from about 25 yards out with seven minutes gone in the second half.
After Morris’ goal, the Thunderwolves (7-4-1) tied it again when Ryan Creager scored unassisted from about 15 yads out in the 66th minute.
Craddock made seven saves in goal for the Hounds.
HOBBS — College of the Southwest got two goals from Arminda Reinhardt on Sunday and remained unbeaten for the season with a 3-1 women’s soccer victory over Eastern New Mexico University.
Zoe Cranmer scored from 25 yards out to give the Lady Mustangs (9-0) the early lead before Reinhardt convered a feed from teammate Ryanne Arnold with about 17 minutes left in the half.
The Zias (6-6-1) cut the margin in half when senior midfielder Anna Funck found senior forward Kara Henderson in front of the Lady Mustangs’ net, and Henderson put the ball in for her third goal of the season.
Reinhardt restored the margin for College of the Southwest when she headed the ball in past ENMU keeper Stephanie Sanchez with 13:20 to go in the match.
Two potential Zias goals were nullified in the second half, one for an offsides penalty and the other on a foul in the box.
