EDMOND, Okla. — Junior defender Tamara Geels scored two goals and sophomore midfielder Melissa DoRemus and freshman defender Whitney Hancock each had a goal and an assist Thursday, lifting Texas A&M-Commerce to a 4-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in the first round of the Lone Star Conference women’s soccer tournament.

In the other first-round matchup, fifth-seeded Midwestern State slipped past No. 4 Angelo State 2-1. Friday’s semifinals pit third-seeded Commerce against No. 2 West Texas A&M at 11 a.m. (MDT), followed by top-seeded host Central Oklahoma against Midwestern State.

The championship match is set for noon (MST) on Sunday.

DoRemus, who scored twice in the Lions’ 11-7 double-overtime win at ENMU on Sunday, put in a header off a teammate’s shot that deflected off the crossbar. Commerce (11-7-3) then made it 2-0 just before halftime when Geels converted a header to the right side of the net.

ENMU (9-9-1) cut the margin in half in the 49th minute when junior Nicole Bregler headed in a cross from teammate Kara Henderson. The Lions added insurance in the 69th minute when Geels got her second goal after a free kick by Hancock in the penalty box bounced around and came to rest about two yards from the goalline.
The final goal came about 8 1/2 minutes later when DoRemus took a shot from just inside the box and freshman midfielder Ashley Osborne kicked it past the outstretched arms of ENMU keeper Stephanie Sanchez.

Sanchez compiled 12 saves for the match. Commerce dominated with 22 total shots to five for ENMU, including a 16-4 margin in shots on goal.
