The Portales Rams rebounded from a first-round loss in Las Vegas’ Stu Clark basketball tournament to dominate the Lordsburg Mavericks Friday afternoon 62-37.
The Rams spread the ball around, as center Chance Sherburne led Portales with 9 points, followed by fellow senior Cruz Ontiveros posting 8 points.
“I feel real good because our kids came out and played real well,” Portales head coach Mark Gallegos said. “We knew it was big for us to come back and rebound and jump on (Lordsburg) early and play well throughout the game.”
The Rams took a modest first quarter lead of 13-6, but posted a 20-12 second-quarter advantage take a 33-18 halftime lead. The Portales boys took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 17-2.
The Rams will play Taos today for the tournament’s consolation championship.
“If (Taos) is as good as Santa Fe Capital is, than we’re going to have to come out and play,” Gallegos said.
