Portales Lady Ram head coach Brenda Gomez said after Saturday night’s Ram Basketball Shootout loss that if she hadn’t looked at the scoreboard, she’d be more pleased than the night before. But scoreboard was working and the Lady Rams lost to Lubbock’s Trinity Christian 52-32.
“The effort was there and the turnovers weren’t,” Gomez said. “We let them get some easy baskets because we didn’t get baseline side on defense, but we’ll work on that. I just was so much more pleased with the effort today.”
Trinity Christian’s Renee Wilson led the Lady Lion charge with a game best 15 points followed by Layne Reeves with 10 points and Amanda Hill’s 9 points.
Hill scored all of her 9 points in the first quarter.
“I thought we did a good job defensively,” Trinity Christian head coach Tory Bryant said. “We’ve been stressing defense all week in practice and our kids have really been picking it up.”
Kaycee Quick led the Lady Rams with 10 points, followed by sophomore Tara Johnson with 7, while Vicki Huber added 6.
“I thought Kaycee did really well offensively,” Gomez said. “I think she’ll need to adjust some things on defense. She needs to always be aware of her man on the back side, but I was really happy with her and Vicki on the post position, they got some good rebounds and put the ball in the hole.”
Hill led the Trinity Christian girls to a 11-10 first quarter lead, but all of Huber’s 6 points came in the first quarter.
Trinity Christian began to pour it on in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Rams 16-8 before stretching their lead to double digits in the second quarter.
