Lorenzo “Lenchito” Cabral was described by the principal of his school in Portales as a being a good student who was respected and respectful of others
Steiner Principal Becky Flen described Lorenzo has being a “very, typical boy” on the playground. He was also known to be a sweetheart, stopping his teachers in the hall just to give them hugs, Flen said.
“He’s just one of those kids you adored, he was a sweetie,” said Flen.
To handle the emotional issues and trauma that his classmates could experience following the death of 6-year-old Lorenzo, Portales Schools will be bringing in counselors to talk to the students and explain to them the situation. Counselors will be in place on Tuesday morning, Flen said.
Elementary school counselor Lisa Harrell will host a session during which students will be able to ask questions and talk about the situation and about Lorenzo. Parents are encouraged to be at the counseling session on Tuesday, Harrell said.
“We will be letting them do something for the child (Lorenzo), like drawing or talking about a memory they have,” Harrell said.
On Friday, if needed, a group grief session will be held to teach the students how to cope with death. Harrell will also be available to help as needed.
The situation could possibly trigger several emotions in the children, she said.
“We are going to be there the best that we can for students, staff and faculty,” said Harrell.
Funeral services for Lorenzo are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales. Burial will follow at Portales Cemetery.
