RUIDOSO—The Portales Rams beat the Ruidoso Warriors four out of five times last season. Saturday night, the Portales boys continued that trend with a 60-46 district win in the mountains.
“Offensively we did a good job,” Portales head coach Mark Gallegos said. “We didn’t have the same kind of defensive intensity that we had (against Roswell). We talked at the half about our defensive intensity, and we came out in the third quarter and we were a lot better defensively.”
The Rams built a 30-22 lead at the half, before taking control for good in the third quarter.
Portales led by 12, 44-32 heading into the fourth and final period and the lead made it possible for Gallegos to see more of his bench.
“We kind of extended the lead, and it was good because we got to play a lot of kids at the end of the game,” Gallegos said.”
Senior guard Cruz Ontiveros (15 points) led three Rams in double figures. Skyler Partin added 13, and fellow senior Chance Sherburne contributed 10.
Ruidoso’s Brand Franklin led all scorers with 16 points.
The Rams conclude the first half of their District 4-3A schedule hosting Dexter Tuesday, before traveling to Roswell to play the NMMI Colts Friday night.
“It’s great to have a home game on Tuesday to finish the first round of district, we just have to not (overlook) anybody,” Gallegos said.”
