Halfway through the Rams District 4-3A schedule, Portales is on cruise control with a 4-0 record after a dominating 60-20 win against the Dexter Demons Tuesday night at Portales High School.
The game was decided fairly early with Portales leading 31-9 at the half , and Ram head coach Mark Gallegos was pleased that his kids kept their heads about them.
“We stayed pretty focussed, there were still some mental breakdowns but overall I was happy with the intensity,” Gallegos said.
While the Rams put up a lot of points, the scoring was spread out.
Junior guard Chris Mosier led the Rams with 11 points, followed by senior post Todd McBroom’s 9 points. Senior Chance Sherburne added 8 points while junior guard B.J Kirven contributed 7 points in his first meaningful playing time of the season.
Along with Kirven, Gallegos made it a point to get junior Ethan Tucker into the game as well.
“They’re playing hard,” Gallegos said. “They’re still making mistakes but that’s why they’re out there. As long as they give me the effort, we’ll really work to get them some time out there.”
Portales senior guard Skyler Partin also noticed some of the younger Rams playing hard.
“I think that had to do with a lot of our guys that don’t play a lot, they wanted to prove something and show coach that they can play so they can get more playing time in the future,” Partin said.
The Rams (12-6, 4-0) begin the second half of their District 4-3A schedule Friday in Roswell against NMMI before hosting Ruidoso Tuesday night.
“NMMI is a big game for us. If we can get one over there, we’ll be in good shape,” Gallegos said. “Because we’ve got two of our last three at home.”
“It’s going to be fun, everybody’s going to be gunning for us so we’re going to have to play, we can’t back off and act like we have it won,” Partin said.already,” Partin said.
