The 9th Judicial District Attorney’s office will launch a senior citizen safety project at 11 a.m. Monday at Valencia Elementary School in Portales, according to a press release.
The program is called “The Newman Project” in honor of Odis and Doris Newman, a Roosevelt County senior citizen couple killed in 2005.
Its goal is to promote safety and provide protection for seniors against many types of criminal activity, the release reads.
Central to the program are safety inspections of senior citizens’ homes provided by the district attorney’s office. At their completion, necessary safety items such as deadbolt locks, peep holes, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers will be installed.
Valencia students helped design the program’s logo and are hosting the kickoff. Officials from the district attorney’s office, Rep. Keith Gardner, R-Roswell, and Vickie Dixon, daughter of Odis and Doris Newman, are expected at the event.
