ALBUQUERQUE — Eastern New Mexico University’s foray into Division I Tuesday night didn’t go too well.
The Zias scored first, but by the second inning they were out of contention and were handed a 19-2 pasting by the University of New Mexico.
ENMU (20-18), which had won seven of its previous eight games, jumped on top in the opening inning as Kristina Goodman led off with a single to left-center, took second on Valerie Villela’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Rebecca Quinones’ single down the right field line. But the Zias managed only one more hit the rest of the way in a game called after 4 1/2 because of the eight-run rule.
The first 11 Lobos hit safely in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Samantha Hughes started the inning with a single and capped the scoring with a grand slam home run.
Junior first baseman Lindsey Elcess then highlighted a seven-run second by blasting a three-run homer to right center.
The Lobos (8-13) loaded the bases on three singles to start the third, but ENMU pitcher Nicole Dickson (12-5) managed to limit the damage by retiring Elcess on a sacrifice fly to center and getting Heather Carter to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play — one of two turned by the Zias.
Carter hit a run-scoring single in the fourth to make it 19-1. The Zias pushed over a run in the fifth on a walk to Anna Herskowitz, Alex Mayo Otis’ single and groundouts by Brittany Regalado and Casandra McCommons.
