Based upon the recommendations of people from the Portales and Clovis area and across New Mexico, the Kene Terry Band has been chosen as the April Artist of the Month by the New Mexico Music Commission.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Logan High School graduate and lead vocalist Kene Terry, on being chosen for the honor.

“The band has a great bio, good resume, great sound and they work hard, said Nancy Laflin, executive director of the New Mexico Music Commission. “The folks in the Clovis and Portales area like them.”

The Portales band formed a year ago as a way to help promote the album and to share music, Terry said.

“We were really just thrown together,” Terry said.

Playing at various venues in New Mexico, Texas and Colorado, the band hopes to establish themselves in the industry while continuing to develop their own unique style of music, Terry said.

“People lump it as country or rock ‘n’ roll, but it’s a mix of both,” Shem Peachey, lead guitarist and 2005 Eastern New Mexico University graduate said.

Describing their music as a blend of Americana, Texas and alternative country, the band hopes to become know as the sound of New Mexico, band members said.

“I think New Mexico gets left out of the Southwest scene,” Peachey said.

Being a part of the band has allowed for some fun times and experiences they might not have had otherwise, they said.

“We all have different influences, but somewhere in there we have common ground,” Terry said.

A highlight for the band has been playing at the 2006 New Mexico State Fair, Terry said. Spending three days snowed in at Willard also proved to be an experience that brought new friendships, Terry said.

“It turns out it was some of the best people we met on the road,” Peachey said.

“The biggest thrill I’ve ever had is playing music with these guys,” band member and Eastern New Mexico University student Jimmy Neece said.
