Woman robbed at knife point

PNT Staff Report

Portales Police are investigating a report of an armed robbery at a Portales real estate office.

Officers were dispatched to Eastern Sunbelt Real Estate, 801 S. Ave. C, at approximately 4 p.m. Thursday after dispatchers received a 911 call reporting an armed robbery, according to Capt. Lonnie Berry of the Portales Police Department.
Jean Sherburne told the PNT she was alone in the office when a Hispanic female came into the office armed with a fixed-blade knife. She said suspect threatened her and pushed her into a wall before taking her purse, which the victim said contained her personal information and cash.

“The money can be replaced and so can the cards and stuff, but it’s like she took everything,” Sherburne said.

Roy Rackler, broker at the business, said no property or money belonging to the business was taken.

“It’s pretty brazen to come in in broad daylight and take a woman’s purse,” Rackler said.
Berry said all available officers were dispatched to the scene and extra detectives were called in later. He said no arrests had made at press time but police were actively following up leads on a possible suspect.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic female in her late 30s, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a dark complexion and wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, police said.

Berry said the call was the first reported armed robbery in 2007.

He said police had investigated two or three armed robberies in 2006.
