RUIDOSO — The Portales Lady Rams followed a dominating performance against St. Michael’s earlier this week with a similar crushing of Ruidoso in District 4-3A action Friday, beating the Lady Warriors 8-1.
“We played very well,” Lady Rams coach Michelle Wallis said. “It was a very valuable win for us.”
Portales’ supremacy showed early. In the first four singles matches and eight sets, the Lady Rams gave up just two games, including senior Ella Erf’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Courtney Keller and junior Kassandra Short’s 6-0, 6-0 win against Graciella Nunez.
“Kassandra played extremely well,” Wallis said. “Tessa Bryant played the No. 3 spot and she was just a different player today. She played with confidence and she played strong, hitting line shots— just very consistent, she played very well. I’m very pleased with her.”
Portales’ Tessa Bryant also cruised through her match against Marissa Balderama 6-0, 6-1, while junior Tara Thron won 6-0, 6-2.
The only Portales loss of the day came from Lauren Woodward, a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 5 singles. But Shelby Lucero quickly got the Lady Rams back on track with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Brenda Pino.
“Lauren lost, but she played well,” Wallis noted.
Portales’ doubles teams routed Ruidoso as well, with Erf and Short beating Keller and Nunez 6-2, 6-0. Bryant and Lucero beat Balderama and Chavez 6-2, 6-3.
The Portales boys beat Ruidoso 7-2. No other information was immediately available.
Portales’ teams continue district action Tuesday, as they host Lovington.
