Ram sophomore Donavin Sanchez fired a tournament best one-under par 69 as the Portales golfers beat Clovis High School and Clovis Christian in a Clovis golf triangular Monday at Clovis’ municipal golf course.
As a team, the Rams shot a 297, six strokes better than Clovis’ 303 and Clovis Christian shot a 357.
“Donavin even had a few hiccups along the way,” Ram golf coach Pat Crowley said. “His putter wasn’t exactly his best friend today. He did a great job of handling the little bad things that can pop up during a round and kept his head in it and made some quality golf shots.”
Portales sophomore William Archibeque followed up Sanchez’ score with a 73, tied for second best with Clovis freshman Kyler Brewer. Rick Bergman shot a 75, while senior Jefferson Powers managed an 80, followed by fellow senior Garrett Hatch’s 92.
“We had a goal for these kids to break 300 (as a team),” Crowley said. “Granted it was on a par 70 course, but they had four good scores and this is what they’re capable of.”
The Lady Rams finished second behind Clovis, as Tori Teague shot a 91, followed by fellow senior Lindsey Woodward’s 97. Sophomore Amber McCasland shot a 104, as Lexie Polich shot a 113.
“Tori got another leg to qualify for the state tournament,” Lady Ram head coach Brenda Gomez said. “Lindsey was just short three shots. They played really well.”
Portales travels to Hobbs today for a tournament at Ocotillo golf course.
