Focus on financial freedom

Rogers resident Kerry Victor says he’s been successful in helping people get out of debt and manage money better and the course he teaches is back for its third run in Portales to prove it.

Victor is bringing Financial Peace University, a 13-week money handling program, to Emmanuel Baptist Church in Portales early next month.

The program was created by financial consultant Dave Ramsey who is heard around the country on a syndicated national radio program.

“It’s a biblically common sense-based program that teaches people how to live on a budget and how to live on a budget they can live with,” Victor said.

Emmanuel Baptist pastor Walter Huber says that the program will also show young couples how to avoid debt.

“It will help them come out of debt, but it will also help them from going into debt,” Huber said. “I think that’s probably as important as anything. If you get a newly married couple into that class, I think that their lives would be a lot better.”

“Payments tie up your biggest wealth building asset and that’s your income,” Victor said. “If you can free up your income to build wealth then you can do something with it besides make payments.”

The class was originally planned to begin July 26, but the start date has been pushed back to Aug. 9 with orientation and sign-ups planned for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 and Aug. 7. The class consists of 13 two-hour sessions and the materials needed for the course cost $96.25. Victor says the time and money investment is well worth it.

Victor says credit is one of the most heavily marketed products in America and it has created problems for many.

“We live in a plastic world, and it’s so easy to use that plastic — easy to charge things and this tells you ways that you can not do those things. You have the money in hand or you don’t do it.”

This will be Victor’s fourth program. He’s hosted one at the Dora Baptist Church and the two latest programs at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

He said he had numerous people asking him about it after he did it at Dora, they didn’t want to drive the 40 miles round trip every week so Victor brought it to Portales.

Victor also says that the more than 40 couples that have attended the classes are doing well.

“I’ve had a tremendous amount of good feedback from it,” Victor said. “I know of a couple of young couples that have almost totally eliminated their debt and are in the process of building retirement while they’re in their 20’s and 30’s.”

In fact, Victor said that he knows of couples that have come out of $70,000 to $80,000 of debt in three years.
“It’s just a matter of getting the right perspective on money and material things,” Victor said.
