Nationally-known speaker Michele Borba will be in Portales on Friday to present a seminar to school officials, teachers, staff, administration and community members.
A motivational speaker, Borba will present a talk on Building Moral Intelligence, Part II, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Portales High School Library, said Trina Valdez, director of Federal Programs for Portales Schools.
“Anyone who is interested in attending is more than welcome to,” Valdez said of the program.
Borba is recognized as an expert on child development, violence prevention and character development. She has appeared on programs such as the Today Show, The View and Focus on the Nation. She is also the author of 21 books, according to a press release issued by Portales Schools.
This will be the second year that Borba has traveled to Portales to speak. Lessons learned from last year’s motivational talk were utilized in the classrooms of the Portales Schools, Valdez said.
Jonathan Smith, a teacher at Lindsey Middle School, said that he learned during last year’s presentation how to look at the students behavior and how to better understand and empathize with the students. It also allowed him to see the students beyond the academic process and help to instill morals in the students, he said.
“It taught me as the teacher how to understand the kids’ behavior,” Smith said.
For Lindsey reading teacher Deb Howard, lessons learned from the presentation were also worked into her reading program at the school. Choosing books that have rich moral dilemmas gave her students the opportunity to gain insight on different situations, she said.
“Cause and effect helped the students to learn and see how the characters handled the situation and what they learned from the story,” Howard said.
