Bond election slated for Tuesday

“Education is your best investment” is the slogan being used by the Portales Municipal School district in support of the upcoming bond election that will take place on Tuesday.

“I’m really excited about this,” said Don Thomas, community committee member. “We just want to encourage everybody to get out and vote.”

Voters can vote on the proposed $9.5 million bond that would be used in conjunction with $11.8 million the state has awarded the school district to build a new facility that would replace Steiner Elementary school and Lindsey Middle School. Both of the schools have been in operation for 70 years, said superintendent Randy Fowler.

“The importance of it is, we’re trying to upgrade our facilities for our students,” Fowler said of the proposed bond.

By building a new facility, the school district would spend about $16 million. The cost of remodeling the existing facilities would be $25.8 million. With the new facility in place the district would be able to regroup students in the existing schools for more effective grouping of the students, Fowler said.

“We feel like it will be academically important for students to be grouped together,” Fowler said.

Thomas feels that by investing in the schools and students is an investment in the well being of the community.

“I don’t want to just barely win this, I want to win it in a landslide,” Thomas said of the election.

For Scott Davis, community committee member and father of three, the passage of the bond will be a benefit to not only his children, but all children and students involved, he said.

“It’s not very often that we are presented with such a win-win situation when it comes to school funding. It’s good for the schools, it’s good for the community,” Davis said.
