Zia volleyball loses and Zia and Hound cross country competes

LUBBOCK — The Eastern New Mexico University men’s cross country team finished fifth out of eight teams while the women were sixth out of 10 in Friday’s Jackrabbit Open, hosted by Texas Tech.

Tech swept both team titles, finishing with 35 points in men’s competition to 55 for runnerup South Plains and 29 points for the women to 60 for South Plains.

Senior Kennedy Baiywo led the Greyhounds in the five-mile men’s race with a time of 27 minutes, 15.1 seconds for 36th place, one spot ahead of teammate Dominic Pachecho (27:19.1). The top runners for the women were Jasmine Sanchez, 39th in 20:20.3, and Krystal Becenti, 41st in 20:23.4.

ENMU is not scheduled to return to action until Oct. 9, when it competes in an event at Angelo State.

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Adina Gray and Sha Tramble combined for 30 kills Saturday as Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated Eastern New Mexico Univeristy 30-21, 30-25, 30-25 in Lone Star Conference volleyball.

Gray had 14 kills and eight digs while Tramble compiled 14 kills, nine digs and three aces for the Javelinas (5-5, 1-1 LSC). Kingsville’s Tara Grier had a match-high 26 digs.

The Zias (3-13, 0-2), who have dropped 11 of their last 12 matches, got 12 kills from junior middle blocker Megan Weitz. Senior outside hitter Randi Egley added nine kills while sophomore setter Heidi Geyer contributed 14 digs.

ENMU’s next outing is at 6 p.m. (MDT) on Wednesday at LSC rival West.
