Portales residents charged with child abuse

Two Portales residents have been arrested for what police said were their roles in beating a 13-year-old with a rope.

Jesus Gonzales, 28, and Susana Gonzales, 47, were arrested Wednesday and charged with abuse of a child, a third-degree felony, according to a statement from the Portales Police Department.

They are both in the Roosevelt County Detention Center on $6,000 bond.

The release said the victim, a 13-year-old boy, was examined and treated Wednesday at Roosevelt General Hospital for wounds, which suggest a beating by a rope. A rope believed to be used in the abuse was discovered through execution of a search warrant, the release said.

Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said the 13-year-old is related to the Gonzales family, but did not further elaborate.

No listed telephone number was available for Jesus Gonzales. A person who answered the phone at Susana Gonzales’ residence said she was seeking legal representation and declined comment at the time.
