Gaelic storm thunders into area

Freedom New Mexico

Performing driving pipe sets, spirited fiddle tunes and haunting Celtic ballads, Gaelic Storm will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lyceum Theatre in Clovis as part of Clovis Community College’s Cultural Arts Series.

Christy Mendoza, Cultural Arts director at CCC, said she has been trying to get the group to come to Clovis for three years. Their popularity and touring schedule have kept them from coming to the area until now, she said.

The Celtic band has been together for a decade and plays about 125 dates per year.

A “life of the party sort of group,” according to Mendoza, the band appeared in the film “Titanic” as the group that played during the party in steerage attended by Jack and Rose.

The group’s music will also be featured on the upcoming version of the computer game, “The Sims.”

The show will last about two hours, including an intermission, and will showcase Celtic dancers from Los Alamos, Mendoza said.

There will be a reception following the concert at the Mabry Inn where the audience will be able to meet the show’s cast.

Tickets are available at the CCC cashiers’ windows or at the door. Mendoza recommends arriving at the show early to purchase tickets.
