Tuesday evening will mark the kickoff for the annual Mayors Christmas Tree at 6 p.m. at the Portales City Hall.
“It was an opportunity to give underprivileged children in the community a chance to have a nice Christmas,” said Amie Franz, public relations for the City of Portales.
Created 19 years ago, the program allows community members to choose a name off the Mayors Christmas Tree during the kickoff celebration. Those that have chosen a name from the tree are encouraged to spend up to $30 on the child for both clothing and a toy, Franz said.
“Community members are encouraged to come and choose a name off the tree,” Franz said.
During the kickoff celebration, entertainment will be provided by the Portales High School choir. Refreshments will be provided by the Portales Woman’s Club, who also help with registering those that have chosen names from the tree, Franz said.
New this year will be Santa’s Workshop. Children in attendance will be able to have their picture taken with Santa Claus, after he arrives with a little help from the Portales Fire Department. The pictures will be free due to the sponsorship of the Portales Mainstreet Organization, Franz said.
The children will also have the opportunity to make a holiday candy gram with a little help from members of the Portales High School Family Career and Community Leaders of America, who will serve as Santa’s helpers, Franz said.
“Christmas is about giving and this is a great opportunity to help give to those in need,” Franz said.
