PJHS News
Spanish classes working on projects
Students in Ruben Tellez’s Spanish classes are completing three separate projects.
The first is a family poster board. Hallways are decorated with students’ posters complete with Spanish labels for family members, vacations, and pets. They completed a Thanksgiving card that will be sent to wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In the next few weeks, students begin their creative piñata construction. As students complete the project they learn Spanish customs.

MESA team excels in competition
Shareen King and Patricia Correll took their students to the Southeast Region New Mexico Math Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Fall Design competition Nov. 9.
The On-Site Surprise team, Bryan Gore, Kayla Martinez, Christa Tarango and Roy Tarango, placed fifth. The On-Site Math team, Tim Varela, Russell VanDam, Marissa Mowrer and Paige Hartman, placed third. The combined total score earned Portales Junior High fourth top team at the 2007 Southeast Region Fall Design. Students gathered ideas to work on for the MESA Day competition scheduled in April, where over 2,000 students from all over New Mexico compete.

Basketball
Only one night of games is scheduled this Thanksgiving week. Monday both the seventh-and eighth-grade boys “A” play in Texico. That same afternoon the Texico girls come to Portales to play the Lady Rams seventh-and eighth-grade “A” teams. There is a possibility of the girls having a set of “B” games also.

Thanksgiving break
School dismisses at regular time Tuesday as students and their families have the rest of the week away from school to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday together.

PED site visit
Patricia Williams from the New Mexico Public Education Department completed an evaluation of PJHS Monday and Tuesday.
Williams reported in the exit interview that she was quite impressed with the junior high personnel from the administration to the teachers and staff. She found that student data is used to drive instruction and that students are learning. She commented on the tutoring offered to students and their knowledge of the curriculum and state standards and benchmarks.

Math tutoring held for parents
Tuesday evening 20 parents took advantage of the training from the math department helping parents understand ways to help their students with their math homework.

Coaches Caleb King and Mal Webster will travel to Melrose Monday and Tuesday this week, where their junior high basketball teams will compete in a tournament.

Principal David Bass will accompany Dora seniors to Hobbs Tuesday. New Mexico Junior College will host a tour and lunch at their campus. The group will return to Dora by 3:45 pm.

Thanksgiving break
School will be in session all day Monday and all day Tuesday. Students will be off Wednesday through Friday. School will resume Nov. 26.
