Fire department performs grain elevator rescue

PNT Staff Report

Portales Fire Department personnel performed an aerial rescue Monday at the J.D. Heiskell grain elevator. One person was transported to Roosevelt General Hospital.

Portales Fire Department Battalion Chief Lance Hill said the accident did not result in a fatal injury. Hill said privacy laws prohibited him from releasing the name, age or sex of the victim and the extent of injuries.

The fire department received a call at 8:20 a.m. Monday of an industrial accident at J.D. Heiskell at 117 E. Commercial for a fall victim needing rescue, Hill said.

Hill said the victim was rescued atop the grain elevator at a height of approximately 80 feet using the department’s aerial ladder truck.

Portales firefighters were on scene with a crew of eight for approximately 55 minutes, assisted by Portales police, said Hill.

J.D. Heiskell officials did not return phone calls. RGH was unable to release information without a victim’s name.
