Altrusa members prepare for Holiday Happening

Tradition will continue as the 10th annual Holiday Happening is set to take place on Saturday in the Eastern New Mexico University Campus Union Ballroom.

Hosted by the Portales Altrusa Club, all money raised from the annual event is used in some way within the community, said Cindy Harth, chairperson for the event.

This year’s funds will be used to provide musical instruments for the Portales Junior High School, Harth said.

In the past, the club has purchased and donated items for the Roosevelt General Hospital and made donations to the Make-A-Wish foundation. The club recently finished a three-year project that provided playground equipment for one of the parks in Portales, Harth said.

Individuals, families or organizations purchase a table to decorate and receive a certain number of tickets for sponsoring a table. Table sponsorship is the main source of revenue for the event, which includes a catered luncheon.

Since the beginning of the event, Harth has decorated a table each year. Sometimes more than one. Ideas for table themes are always being found, she said.

“It’s a lot of work but it is a lot of fun,” Harth said.

This year’s event has extra meaning as it will be dedicated to her husband Chester, who passed away earlier in the year. Though men attend the event, Chester Harth was the first to actually decorate a table, something that he really enjoyed doing, Harth said.

Harth said she was “honored” the event was being dedicated to her husband.

“He was a wonderful person,” said friend and fellow Altrusa club member Gaynelle Thomas.

Thomas will be decorating and dedicating her table to Chester Harth, whom has always been involved with the event. Thomas will be using items including a pedal tractor and dishes from the many collections of items that Harth had, she said.

The plan for the table is the pedal tractor, mounted on a rotating board, along with a doll that belongs to Thomas. A John Deere theme will carry over into the rest of the table using Harth’s dishes, Thomas said.

During the event, a fashion show will be held, featuring items from Dillards. A silent auction and door prizes will also be a part of the festivities. Dillards will once again decorate a table. All of the table’s decorations will be available for purchase. All proceeds from the table are given to the club, said Dannah Brown, Altrusa club member.

Brown, who is in charge of ticket sales for the event, said a few single tickets are left for purchase. She can be reached at 356-5349 for information.
