Official: Fundraiser good fun for good cause

Holiday spirits are sure to be lifted, swirled, sniffed and tasted as the wine flows Saturday night in Portales to benefit the Portales MainStreet Program.

Plenty of wine, hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment will be served at the annual Portales Winter Wine Fest Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Portales Ice house.

“It has been the most popular event that MainStreet does all year long,” event coordinator Rose Robbins said.

But Robbins was also quick to point out that this is not a fancy, formal event and that everybody (of drinking age) will be welcome.

“It is a nice evening adult casual thing,” Robbins said. “It’s not at all formal.”

St. Clairs Vineyard from Deming will host the event set for Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Portales Ice House and the cost is $25 per person.

“The food will be the equivalent of a full meal,” Robbins said. “Plus, you get to taste the different wines.”

Judging by the last two events, organizers expect between 100 and 130 people to attend and they plan to raise about $3,000 for the Portales MainStreet program.

Proceeds from events like the Winter Wine Fest will be used to revitalize and rejuvenate the Portales Inn, renovation of the historic Yam
Theater and to continue the facade improvement program.

Organizers also want to create an Arts and Culture District and to acquire property and recruit economic development as well as improve the downtown streetscape.

“Most of them realize that it’s a fundraiser,” Portales MainStreet president Danny Woodward, owner of Woody’s Jewelry said. “Most everybody realizes what it’s for and it goes for a good cause. It’s a good social event to get out and mingle and visit with people and shake hands and get people into the Christmas spirit. It’s a lot of fun.”

Woodward described Saturday’s event as one of Portales MainStreet’s two big fundraisers of the year.

“It’s very, very important,” Woodward said. “We try to make a pool of money so that we can do our facade improvement program. We really don’t have much of a budget, so we use events like this and the Heritage Days fun run to improve downtown Portales.”
