Christmas break starts Wednesday
Portales High School will dismiss all students at 1 p.m. Wednesday for Christmas break. Students will take their semester exams on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Students will return to school Jan. 8 to begin the spring semester.
The Portales High School band and choir departments invite the community to an afternoon of music for the holiday season at 2 p.m. today.
Selections from around the world will be played and refreshments will be served.
Honor society inducts members
The National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization, established to recognize outstanding high school students. It is estimated that more than 1 million participate in NHS nationwide.
Portales High School’s chapter held inducted seven seniors and 27 juniors on Oct. 29, bringing the total active members to 58.
ACT/SAT dates announced
Seniors interested in attending a four-year university after graduation must take a college entrance exam, either the ACT or the SAT.
The next ACT will be given Feb. 9. Deadline to register is Jan. 4. The next SAT will be given Jan. 26. Deadline to register is Dec. 26.
Seniors should also be applying to the colleges of their choice this month as well as obtaining scholarship information.
AXA scholarship offered to seniors
The AXA Achievement Community Scholarship will award up to $725,000 in scholarships this year to graduating high school seniors across the country. The deadline for the 2008 scholarships is Feb. 15. To learn more visit their Web site at:

Dora School News
Finals schedule announced
Dora High School students will be taking their first semester final exams this week. Monday through Wednesday will be full school days, 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Monday’s classes will be on the regular bell schedule.
Tuesday, students will be taking finals for their first and third period classes and reviewing for second, fourth, and fifth period. Wednesday, final exams in second, fourth, and fifth period classes will be administered, along with sixth hour review. Thursday, students will take sixth and seventh hour finals, and school will be dismissed after lunch. Buses will run at 12:30 on Thursday for all students.
Elementary readers awarded
Dora students in kindergarten through sixth grade will enjoy their annual Accelerated Reader party planned for Thursday morning. After a brief Christmas gift exchange, students will participate in an awards presentation for highest weekly reading points, highest reading points per class, along with team awards.
Snacks will be served at the “Christmas Beach Party” in the Rogers Gymnasium once the awards have been given.
Thursday Dora JV and varsity teams will host Clovis Christian beginning at 3 p.m.

Finals, vacation planned
—Final exams will be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
—Christmas vacation will begin Dec. 24. Jan. 7 will be a teacher in-service day. School will resume Jan. 8.
—Homecoming is Jan. 18.
Ag students raising fish
A new “hands on” project has been started in the Ag Business class during third hour. Ten students have begun an Aquaculture Business on their own, Complete with a 790 gallon fish tank and 100 channel catfish.
Students will learn about aquaculture, accounting, management, computer skills and other Ag Business related terms during this year while raising the fish in the Ag building, according to Ag teacher Damon Terry.
The next basketball game will be Jan. 3 in Texico. JV and varsity girls and boys will play beginning at 4 p.m.
The Broncos next home game will be Jan. 5. JV and varsity teams will begin play at 2 p.m.

Candle Lighting to be held tonight
The elementary school Candle Lighting Program will be held at 7 p.m. today in the multipurpose room. The sixth grade class will present the play, “Christmas Every Day.” Refreshments will be served after the program.
Basketball teams win games
On Dec. 6 the varsity girls and boys played San Jon. Both won their games.
On Dec. 11th the junior high boys team lost to Portales Junior High. The junior high girls team defeated Portales Junior High. The junior varsity boys lost a close game to Texico. The varsity girls lost to Texico, the varsity boys had a win against Texico.
School parties set for Thursday
Elementary school parties will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. School will dismiss at 1 p.m. that day.
