LCU downs Hounds

Freedom New Mexico

LUBBOCK — Senior forward Bernardo Rocha scored five points in a 9-0 run that helped Lubbock Christian pull away to a 74-60 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday.

The 6-foot-9 Rocha shot 6-of-8 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line en route to a game-high 18 points, leading three players in double figures for the Chaparrals (6-4).

Lubbock Christian, playing its home opener, also got 12 points from 6-7 forward Kenny Hewitt and 10 from junior guard Derrick Huffman, both off the bench.

ENMU (3-8), which dressed only seven players with junior forward Travis Cooper sitting out a suspension, also had three players in double figures — junior guard Jamaal McCoy (17) and senior guards Justin Redman-Trotter (12) and Kevin Davis (11).

The Greyhounds scored nine consecutive points for an 11-2 lead with just over four minutes gone. The Chaps failed to score on seven consecutive possessions, including four turnovers, before Hewitt converted all three shots of a 3-shot foul with 14:31 left in the half.

LCU then went on a 12-1 run for a 22-16 lead with under nine minutes to go, but the Chaps scored only eight points the rest of the half and Redman-Trotter’s 3-point play in the final minute gave the Hounds a 31-30 lead at the break.

The margin could have been larger, but Eastern knocked down just 11-of-22 free throws in the opening stanza.

ENMU took its final lead on a basket by Davis in the first minute of the second half. Leading 55-50 with just over eight minutes left, Rocha’s 3-point play started the Chaps on their game-clinching run and the Hounds never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

LCU shot 52 percent for the game, including 15-of-24 (63 percent) after halftime. The Chaps also converted 12-of-14 free throws in the second half.

ENMU returns to Lone Star Conference crossover action at Greyhound Arena with 4 p.m. games on Thursday against East Central and on Saturday against Southeastern Oklahoma.
