Candidate deadline approaching
Any person who plans to run for political office in the June Primary must make any necessary changes to their voter registration before 5 p.m. Monday, according to a press release from the Roosevelt County Clerk’s office.
The potential candidate’s voter registration must show their correct address and political party affiliation to be included on the ballot.
The cutoff is tied to the governor’s issuing of the Primary Proclamation, which will be made on Jan. 28 for the June 3 primary.
Mrs. Portales applicants sought
The Mrs. New Mexico-America Pageant is seeking applicants for the title of Mrs. Portales to represent the city in the 2008 Mrs. New Mexico-America Pageant on June 21 at the Performing Arts Center in Rio Rancho, according to a press release.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, married at the time of the competition, a U.S. citizen and a New Mexico resident. No talent performance is required. Mrs. New Mexico wins a prize package valued at more than $8,000 plus an expense paid trip to the nationally televised Mrs. America Pageant.

Senate authorizes Cannon funding
WASHINGTON – The Senate gave final passage Tuesday to a bill that authorizes funding two projects at Cannon Air Force Base, according to a press releases from New Mexico’s delegation.
Congress revised the bill to address policy provisions related to Iraq that were opposed by the White House and led President Bush to pocket veto the bill in December, the releases said. The revised bill returns to President Bush to be signed into law.
The bill contains the following funds for Cannon:
• $1.68 million for a new hanger for AC-130 Air Force Special Operations Command aircraft as part of the transition of Cannon to its new mission on Oct. 1.
• $7.5 million for a flight simulator facility for AC-130 aircraft.
