Zias sweep CSW

Freedom New Mexico

Sophomore second baseman Rebecca Quinones enjoyed a huge day at the plate Wednesday as the Eastern New Mexico University softball team opened its home schedule with 11-3 and 28-0 routs of College of the Southwest at Zia Softball Field.

Quinones went 7-for-8 at the plate, including 4-for-4 in the opener. She had a three-run double, a two-run homer and six RBIs in the nightcap.

The Zias, who opened a six-game homestand this week, improved to 4-3 and extended their winning streak to four games.

Quinones hit her bases-clearing double in a nine-run second that staked the Zias to a 10-0 lead in the nightcap. She added a run-scoring double in a seven-run third and belted her first homer of the season in ENMU’s 11-run fourth.

Sophomore third baseman Tawna Tagaloa also drove in six runs in the second game, going 5-for-5 with two homers and a two-run double. Pitcher Natalie Woodside (1-2) worked four innings of three-hit ball and also smacked a two-run homer.

In the opener, Michelle Anderson capped ENMU’s four-run first with a three-run double as the Zias cruised to a five-inning win. ENMU finished the game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth before anyone had been retired, highlighted by center fielder Laura Thompson’s two-run triple.

Ten Zias combined to pound out 15 hits off CSW’s Ruby Garza (0-1) and Megan Navarette. Pitcher Kristen Cruickshank (2-1) and left fielder Alex Mayo Otis each had two hits.

Catcher Lea Santos and designated player Holly Bodway each had an RBI single for the Hobbs-based Lady Mustangs.

ENMU hosts New Mexico Highlands on Friday and Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday in noon doubleheaders.
