Kingsville stops Greyhounds

Freedom New Mexico

Chad Johnson put Eastern New Mexico University’s men in front with a basket less than 30 seconds into Saturday night’s Lone Star Conference South Division game at Greyhound Arena.

It quickly went downhill from there.

The Greyhounds made only seven first-half field goals and shot just 35 percent from the game in absorbing a 61-47 loss at the hands of Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Junior forward Clyde Johnson and senior center Juan Lanauze scored 13 points each for the Javelinas (15-7, 4-3) South. Kingsville cruised into halftime with a 33-17 lead and led by as much as 22 points in the second half.

Senior forard Kendall Clark was the only double-figure scorer for the Hounds (6-16, 0-7) with 11 points.

Kingsville opened a 48-26 lead with 31 minutes left on a basket by reserve Naquawn Lee. ENMU was never able to get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

Senior center Stephen Story added 10 points off the bench for the Javelinas, who shot a modest 42 percent from the floor (25-of-60) but dominated the backboards 43-28. Johnson, Reggie Love and Wendell Mulkey each had seven rebounds for Kingsville.

ENMU closes out a three-game homestand on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. division game against Abilene Christian.
