Voters go to polls today in municipal elections

PNT Staff Report

Early voting concluded Friday for today’s municipal election, said Portales City Clerk Joan Martinez-Terry.

She said 83 people voted early in-person and 16 people requested ballots by mail.

The new voting machines will be used for the municipal election, she said.

Four city council seats are up for election. Alfredo Bachica Jr., incumbent in Ward A, and Donald K. Shafer, incumbent in Ward C, are running unopposed.

In Ward B, incumbent Gary Watkins faces challenger Michael Martinez.

Incumbent Michael Miller faces Keith Thomas in Ward D.

Martinez-Terry said only 16 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the 2006 municipal election.

Elida, Floyd and Dora also have municipal elections today.

In Elida, three people are vying for two trustee positions: Incumbent Manuel Jasso, Glen Schattschneider and Floyd Jones, said Sandra Monks, town clerk/treasurer.

In Floyd, Colin Chandler is running for re-election to a four-year term on the village council. Another four-year term is open, but no one is seeking that seat, said Toni Whitecotton, village clerk.

In Dora, Jack Manis is running for re-election to the village council, and one seat on the council is vacant with no one seeking the seat, said Becky Fraze, village clerk.
