City to replace two long-time councilors

With municipal elections only a few weeks past, city officials are already preparing to fill vacancies in Portales’ city government.

The vacancies are a result of the recent resignation of Mayor Pro-tem Donald ‘D.K.’ Shafer at the March 18 council meeting and council member Jake Lopez seeking election for the Dist. 1 Roosevelt County Commission seat.

“These past weeks have been real busy and with the council and mayor pro-tem positions needing attention,” said Portales mayor Orlando Ortega. “We are following New Mexico statues and abiding by the law to fill the positions.”

With the resignations the city will be losing several decades of experience between the two.

Lopez plans to resign from the city council once he is elected to the county commission. He is unopposed in both the June Democratic Primary as well as the General Election.

No stranger to the commission, Lopez was elected in 1996 as a county commissioner while he was a member of the city council.
