LAS VEGAS, N.M. — It had been a while since the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team managed to beat New Mexico Highlands, and on Wednesday it looked like more of the same.
The Cowboys jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings, but the Greyhounds got three RBIs each from Seth Clabaugh, Clayton Young and Derrick Kennedy in rallying for a 10-6 win. It snapped their own six-game losing streak, and ended a five-game slide against Highlands dating to a 15-9 ENMU win at Greyhound Field on April 5, 2005.
The Hounds (16-14) had also dropped six in a row at Highlands. Their last road win over the Cowboys came as part of a doubleheader split in March 2002.
Freshman right-hander Doug McIntyre did not make it through a five-run Highlands first, but five relievers combined to hold the Cowboys (14-17) scoreless over the final seven frames. Sophomore left-hander Jeremy Johnson, who worked two innings, earned his first win of the season.
Meantime, the Hounds collected 16 hits off five Highlands pitchers. Nathan Swanson (0-2), who relieved starter C.J. Thornton during ENMU’s five-run fifth, took the loss.
Clabaugh hit a two-run double while Young knocked a two-out, two-run single to cap the fifth-inning rally and put the Hounds in front 8-6. Kennedy, who singled home a run in the fifth, added a two-run single in the sixth.
Clabaugh delivered a sacrifice fly in the third, while Young drove in another run with a groundout in the fourth.
Kennedy went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and Tyler Hayes and Paden Vendrely also had three hits for ENMU. Center fielder Travon Jackson, hitting .508 in 120 at-bats this season, hit a single, double and home run for the Cowboys while third baseman Ruben Sanchez went 3-for-5.
The Hounds return to Lone Star competition this weekend, beginning a four-game series at Abilene Christian on Friday.
