City, college and Portales Area Transits Service officials are researching the possibility of starting a daily route through Portales.
An internal meeting has been planned to explore the possibility of a routed public transport system for residents, Portales City Manager Debi Lee said.
“The idea of a weekly routed transport inside of Portales is a great idea,” Lee said. “First we need to ensure that the idea is possible and how much the cost would be and if the funding is available.”
The idea is to have one of the vehicles operated by the Portales Area Transit Services stop in a high-traffic location by a weekly schedule, Lee said.
The stops could include trips from Eastern New Mexico University to Wal-Mart for students, or downtown to doctors’ offices for patients, Lee said.
“The purpose of a routed system would be to help out the residents of Portales get around and saving them money by allowing them to ride public transportation,” Lee said.
