Persisting maintenance issues with two generators in coal-fire power plants in Muleshoe and Amarillo has affected electricity production, according to an Xcel Energy press release.

Xcel Energy officials are asking customers in West Texas and eastern New Mexico to continue to turn off unnecessary appliances and lights until 7 p.m. today, according to the release.

Xcel Energy spokesman Wes Reeves said the power company is approaching its peak usage period.

The power company could begin controlled power outages in the Texas-New Mexico region if the demand for electricity outpaces production.
