The Roosevelt County All-Stars advanced to the state 10-11 Little League all-star championship in Deming with a win Wednesday.
With a 6-0 win against Carlsbad Wednesday night the All-Stars have earned a spot in the championship game against Albuquerque Eastdale.
“They worked their tail off,” said assistant coach Clint Walker. “They played a great game from the get-go.”
Players and coaches alike were jubilant.
“I am so excited to get to play in the championship,” said Roosevelt All-Star Matt Martinez. “Beating Carlsbad gave us a lot of confidence.”
Josh Jimenez kept Carlsbad off of the board by pitching five scoreless innings, Walker said.
Holding on to a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth the All-Stars continued its great defensive play to clinch the win.
In the sixth inning, Adam Hernandez took on the pitching responsibilities and struck out the first batter, Walker said.
The next batter hit a deep ball to center field getting on base followed by the third batter taking a base with a walk, making it two on with one out.
A pop fly was caught by Anthony Villanueva for the second out of the inning. The game came to an end when second baseman Alex Villanueva and shortstop Payton Casey ran down the runner trying to steal second base from first.
Emerging from the loser’s bracket, Roosevelt will need to beat Eastdale twice for the championship.
“If we win Thursday we’ll play them again on Friday for the championship,” Walker said. “This is the fartherest that any team in Roosevelt Little League has gone.”
Today’s game begins at 6:30 p.m.
