Angelo State beats Hounds 25-13

Freedom New Mexico

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Senior tailback Daniel Thomas ran for 144 yards and Angelo State’s defense held Eastern New Mexico University to minus-19 yards rushing Saturday as the Rams beat the Greyhounds 25-13 in a Lone Star Conference South Division clash.

The Hounds (1-5, 0-2 South) took a 10-9 lead early in the third quarter on freshman Joseph Banyard’s 5-yard run, and were still within striking distance until the Rams (3-3, 1-1) drove 46 yards in 10 plays for Kobey Lewis’ game-clinching 5-yard run with 1:43 left.

Freshman quarterback J.J. Harp completed 26-of-49 passes for the Hounds, but was sacked six times by the Angelo defense for a net loss of 34 yards.

Freshman Adam Richards booted a pair of field goals for the Hounds, including a 50-yarder in the final minute of the third quarter to pull ENMU to 15-13. That was the longest ENMU field goal since Lee Price kicked a 52-yarder against East Central at Blackwater Draw on Sept. 17, 2005.

Angelo forced a punt following the opening kickoff and marched 57 yards in eight plays, capped by a 29-yard TD pass from Will Mezger to Jeremy Hill. Ryan Smith’s PAT kick was no good, keeping it 6-0.

Richards’ first field goal, a 30-yarder, cut the margin in half with 2:23 to go in the second period, but the Rams used a 31-yard kickoff return by Garrett Tidwell and Thomas’ 55-yard run to the ENMU seven to set up Smith’s 20-yard field goal with 49 seconds left in the half.

ENMU forced a three-and-out following the second-half kickoff, and took over at the ASU 31 after a short punt. A personal foul penalty moved the ball inside the 14, and Banyard scored on a fourth-and-1 play with 11:18 left in the third period.

After an exchange of punts, Thomas capped a 64-yard march with a 14-yard TD run late in the period. Brandon Dominguez returned the ensuing kickoff 26 yards to the ENMU 46, and Harp completed three passes to move the ball inside the 30.

A false start penalty, two incomplete passes and a 4-yard sack of Harp by ASU’s Ben Thomas led to Richards’ long field goal with time running down in the period.

The Rams countered with an 11-play, 67-yard drive ending in Smith’s 29-yard field goal with 8:48 left. After an ENMU punt, Angelo mounted its game-clinching touchdown drive, using up more than 5 1/2 minutes.
