Hounds, Zias lose Sunday soccer

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Redshirt freshman Craig Sutherland scored two goals — including one less than three minutes into the game — as Midwestern State beat Eastern New Mexico University 3-0 Sunday in a matchup of the Southwest Soccer Conference’s top two teams.

Midwestern State, ranked second in NCAA Division II and winners of 10 straight, outshot the Greyhounds 24-2.

Sutherland, who leads Midwestern with 11 goals, gave the Mustangs (12-1, 4-0 SSC) a 2-0 lead midway through the second half when he one-timed a crossing pass from Rob Humphrey.

Senior Grant Shanahan recorded eight saves for the Hounds (4-6-2, 2-1-1). ENMU remains in second place.

Texas Woman’s blanks Zias
A fast start — Chasity Hayter scored three minutes into the game — helped Texas Woman’s beat Eastern New Mexico University 4-0 Sunday in a Lone Star Conference match at ENMU Soccer Field.

Elizabeth Babb gave Texas Woman’s a 2-0 lead midway through the first half on a shot that hit off the right post. The Pioneers (8-6, 3-2 LSC) added a pair of second-half goals.

Freshman Sierra Cardenas record six saves for the Zias (8-8, 2-5), who were playing their last home match of the season.

Seniors Megan Wonner and Hillary Gintowt were honored before the game.
