It’s their job: Jennifer Bolin, manager at Victory Life Coffee House

Name: Jennifer Bolin
Job: Manager at Victory Life Coffee House
Time on job: 5 1/2 years
Background: Bolin, originally from Colorado, attended Portales schools until her freshman year, where she attended Dora High School. She is now studying elementary education and psychology at Eastern New Mexico University and plans to get her master’s degree in counseling.
What does your job entail? I oversee the baristas and complete all the paperwork and books. I also handle the ministry aspect of the store and help out with coordinating events. I do typical managerial work.
What is a typical day like for you? I come to work early in the morning to set things up and I work for three to four hours without any other employees. My set of regulars come in for their daily coffee. The rest of the day, I bounce back between here and school. Usually we have events at night and I come back in and help with those.
Why did you choose this job? To be honest, I got thrown into this job. But then I fell in love with the place. I helped build and decorate the store. I grew up here. I love the regulars and the atmosphere. It’s a ministry as well. I’m also a coffee fanatic.
What kind of training, if any, do you need for this job? I kind of grew into it. When we first opened, nobody else knew about coffee at Victory Life Church besides me, so I was put in here. But one would need managerial experience and barista-running skills.
What do you enjoy most about this job? I love the people I work with and the regulars who come in.
