Police investigating battery cases

PNT Staff Report

Portales police are investigating two aggravated batteries from the past four days, according to Capt. Lonnie Berry.

In the most recent case, a 27-year-old Portales man was beaten about 1 a.m. Sunday at a private residence in the 700 block of West 18th Street, according to Berry. He said police were still gathering evidence, but the arrest of two suspects was pending in the next day or so.

According to statements, Berry said, the 27-year-old was playing games with others at a party, and the battery arose as a result of a game.

Berry said alcohol was involved.

The 27-year-old was treated and released from Roosevelt General Hospital.

In the other incident, a 20-year-old Melrose man was battered about 10 p.m. Friday at Wal-Mart, according to Berry. Police were still gathering evidence Monday and hoped to obtain an arrest warrant soon.

Berry said the fight arose from a conflict between the 20-year-old and the another person at Wal-Mart. The 20-year-old was taken first to a residence in the county and then to the hospital.

“He was later released from the hospital,” Berry said. “We were able to get a statement from him.”

Berry said police don’t know if there was past conflict between the Melrose man and the other person. He hopes police will obtain a Wal-Mart surveillance video to back up witness’ statements.
