Christmas CD recorded in memory of grandmother

In memory of her grandmother, a young woman from Portales has recorded a CD of Spanish and English Christmas songs.

Twenty-one-year-old Falan Duran said Connie Sisneros, her grandmother who died in January, loved music and held Christmas as a favorite holiday.

“It was never about gifts for her; it was about the right reasoning,” Duran said. “Basically (the CD) was just about remembrance of her through me.”

“Diciembre En Nuevo Mexico,” or “December in New Mexico,” was released in late November. Duran is using only her first name on the CD.

Atlantis CDs of Albuquerque is distributing the CD nationally. Duran made the recording at The Woodshed Digital Recording Studios, which her grandfather Andrew Sisneros owns, in Portales.

Duran said her grandmother always wanted her to do such a project and had been there four years ago during the recording of Duran’s first song, a ballad her grandfather wrote about the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Recording the Christmas CD was hard, Duran said, but she knew she was making the effort for the right reasons.

“The songs that I picked, she always used to go around singing them, and it wasn’t just at this time of year,” Duran said.

The CD contains two English songs and two songs written by Andrew Sisneros. Duran said some were pieces the family sang together in church.

Andrew Sisneros said many of the songs are those he remembers singing in the Catholic Church as a child. The Christmas CD was going to be a family project, he said, but after his wife died, Duran volunteered to perform on her own.

“We’ve been working on it since August,” he said.

Duran, a junior majoring in Spanish and communication at the University of New Mexico, hopes to continue pursuing music.

“Diciembre En Nuevo Mexico” is available locally at Hestand Floral and Woodshed Studio for $12.
