Police find cocaine

Portales police found about half an ounce of cocaine, $750 cash and a handgun during a drug raid at a residence on North Abilene Avenue Friday night, said Police Capt. Lonnie Berry.

Officers also arrested a Uriel Torres, 31, and Maria Bonilla, 44, who both lived in the residence, on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The second-degree felony typically carries a nine-year prison term, Berry said.

As of Saturday night, he said both Bonilla and Torres were being held in leiu of a $25,000 cash bond.

Information from a confidential informant started an investigation about a week ago, Berry said. Detectives gathered enough evidence to obtain a search warrant, which they executed just after 8 p.m.

Bonilla and Torres could not be reached for comment, and did not have a listed phone number.

Fire update

Saturday night, investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire that started just before 11 p.m. Thursday at a residence on North Avenue K.

Portales Fire Department Lt. Shannon Lee said the fire involved the back door of the house, which suffered heavy smoke damage despite firefighters quickly extinguishing the blaze. No one was injured.

The American Red Cross provided emergency assistance to homeowner Toni Watson, who has six small dogs, said Cindy Meeks of the Red Cross Clovis office. Watson needs shelter for the dogs until she finds permanent housing.

Anyone interested in assisting Watson can call the Red Cross office at 763-4129. Scott Snyder of the Red Cross said Roosevelt County needs volunteers as well.
