Police investigate auto burglaries

Portales police officers are investigating three auto burglaries that occurred Thursday night and Friday, Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said.

Thursday night, tools were taken out of the back of a pickup truck. Berry said it appeared to be a crime of opportunity.

Friday, someone broke a window in a vehicle and stole a purse, and another vehicle was burglarized as well. Berry had not seen the report on the third theft.

Berry said the first two incidents weren’t related.

“The method of entry on both of them was vastly different, so they do not appear to be connected,” he said.

Police have substantial leads in the case of the stolen purse, Berry said. He did not have any more information about the incidents.

City receives recognition

The City of Portales was honored for beautification efforts Friday in Santa Fe.

Ten communities and programs were recognized.

“We honor these communities and programs for their efforts in litter control, education and elimination, beautification, recycling, graffiti and weed eradication,” said Joe Lobato, executive director of New Mexico Clean & Beautiful. “Every year, communities take on many different projects and programs which clean up their areas of the state, and involve their citizens in taking greater responsibility in improving their cities, towns, villages and tribal lands. This is our way of thanking them for their outstanding efforts.”
