Eastern New Mexico University president Steven Gamble will lead the school’s board of regents to its annual meeting in Santa Fe Wednesday afternoon, to coincide with the start of the state Legislature.
This reception has occurred in each of Gamble’s eight years as president of the university.
“It’s to make sure that our first contact with our legislators is a positive one,” Gamble said. “I think that’s important.”
Gamble also said this annual reception for area legislators usually draws 100 percent attendance of lawmakers from the eastern part of the state.
Gamble also said that the board’s new chairperson, Pauline Ponce, will be valuable to the board, given her time in the state legislature.
“She will be a very good board chairman,” Gamble said. “She was a multi-term representative in the New Mexico legislature, representing Roswell.”
Ponce has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from ENMU.
“She loves ENMU,” Gamble said.
Another agenda item that will require action is the certification by the board that money from the proceeds of general obligation bonds will be used for specific projects.
According to the university:
• $9 million will be used for a renovation of the technology building at the main branch.
• $4 million will be used to plan, design, construct, equip and furnish the educational center at the Roswell branch campus.
• $2 million will be used to upgrade the electrical system at ENMU’s main branch.
