Texans whip Hounds

Freedom New Mexico

PORTALES — Tarleton State held Eastern New Mexico University to one field goal in the first eight minutes Wednesday night and the Texans cruised to a 64-41 Lone Star Conference South Division men’s victory at Greyhound Arena.

Senior guard Marlin Cloudy and junior guard Effran Bryant scored 12 points each for the Texans (13-5, 1-2 South), while junior forward Jeremiah Wilson added 10 points.

Junior guard Jimmie Marshall was the lone double-figure scorer for the Greyhounds (4-13, 0-2) with 11 points.

Wilson’s 3-pointer 45 seconds into the game broke the scoring ice and the Texans never relinquished their lead. Bryant converted a 3-point play, then hit a 3-point shot at the 14:29 mark to make it 13-2 and cap a 10-0 Tarleton run.

The Hounds missed 17 of their first 20 shots and trailed 33-11 with just over three minutes left in the half.

ENMU twice pulled to 16 points early in the second half, but Tarleton went on an 11-2 run to build a 25-point cushion with seven minutes to go.

The Texans shot nearly 50 percent in each half, finishing 23-of-48 for 48 percent. Meantime, they held ENMU to 30 percent field goal shooting on 15-of-30.
