Antonio Salguero, a cancer survivor and retired teacher, is the newest member of the Portales City Council.
Salguero was sworn in Friday, replacing Jake Lopez, who resigned after winning a seat on the Roosevelt County Commission.
“This is my chance, provided my health doesn’t go out or anything like that,” Salguero said. “I could probably give a good ten to 15 years of my life. I feel like I’m healthy enough to do the job. I feel like I have enough education background to do the job.”
Salguero has lived in Portales since 1953 and is a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University.
He was diagnosed with kidney cancer just two weeks after retiring from Portales Municipal Schools in 2006. Doctors surgically removed the cancer and he remains in remission, determined, he said, to serve the community.
“I got out of teaching because I wanted to be able to do the things I wanted to do,” Salguero said.
“I feel like, I want to work with the other councilmen to better Portales,” Salguero said, adding he will work to make sure the city is a place “where our kids do not have to leave Portales to find a job.”
