Library’s storytime program extended to evening

The Portales Public Library is expanding a popular program to help working parents.

Starting next month, the library is holding Family Storytimes at 6 p.m. every Thursday.

“We are hoping by offering an evening storytime that it will allow more families time to participate in bringing their children to the library,” said Children’s Librarian Heather Christensen.

Christensen said librarians know that in some families, both parents are working, or a single parent is working during the day and are not able to make it to the earlier storytimes the library offers.

Storytime features librarians reading to children and engaging them in finger plays, music and other activities designed to encourage reading.

Denise Burnett, director of the library, said “when they had the evening storytimes in the past, families from Cannon Air Force Base would attend.

“With the changing economy, it is unusual to see a mom and dad at home because they are both working,” Burnett said. “This is our way of accommodating their schedule.”
