WT dominates Zias in second half

CANYON, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University Zias hung tough with division-leading West Texas A&M for a half.

But the final 20 minutes belong to the ninth-ranked Lady Buffs, who held the Zias to four second-half field goals en route 87-49 Lone Star Conference South win on Wednesday.

Senior guard Emily Brister, the conference’s second-leading scorer at 24.5 points a game, scored 17 points and Courtney Lee added 13 as WT (18-3, 6-0 LSC South) won its 11-straight game.

Cat Clay led the Zias (9-15, 0-6) with 16 points and Til-Lois Fifer added 11.

WT used a 15-0 run early in the second half to turn a eight-point halftime lead into a 56-31 lead. The Lady Buffs scored 36 points off 24 Zias turnovers and held a 48-30 rebounding edge.

Fueled by Clay’s three 3-pointers, ENMU grabbed a 19-15 lead with a little more than eight minutes left in the half. WT responded with a 10-0 run, which included a Brister 3-pointer, to take the lead for good.
