Altrusa Int’l. Inc. of Portales met Feb. 9 in the Sandia Room at ENMU.
In the absence of president, Vice President Nancy Legleiter presided over the business meeting and conducted the opening ceremonies.
Secret pals were thanked. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved. There were 28 members and one guest present. Dannah Brown gave the Altrusa Accent on strategic planning. Thank you notes were read from Carol McDowell, Vaunceil Turnbough and Geraldine Dooley of the NM Baptist Children’s Home.
Charles Anderson, New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, thanked the club for the $2,000 donation for sports equipment for the home.
The executive board recommended that the club donate $200 to the SANE Scholarship Fund; the motion carried.
An initiation ceremony for Chanda Strong, Veena Parboteeah and Mickie Patterson was conducted
The next regular meeting is Feb. 23 with the finance committee in charge. A proposed slate of officer nominations will be presented at this meeting.
Portales Woman’s Club
Portales Woman’s Club met Feb. 11 with 26 members and seven guests present.
A sign up sheet was passed around for members to volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels in March.
The Home Life committee reminded members to bring thank-you notes to be given to the residents at the Children’s Homes in Portales.
The president announced that Jane Hilliard had made a memorial gift to the Portales Woman’s Club Scholarship Fund in memory of Millie Boyle.
The president reminded members to sign up for the Step For the Roses health and fitness program which begins Feb. 14. Pedometers were available for anyone interested.
The membership voted to donate $50 to the N.M. Girls Ranch.
Following the adjournment of the business meeting, Joyce Combs introduced cancer survivor, Barbara Loewen from Clovis, who inspired the group with her story. A donation was made to the club’s Scholarship Fund in Loewen’s honor.
The next meeting is March 11.
