Zias fall at Kingsville

Freedom New Mexico

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS — After a strong start, the Eastern New Mexico University Zias went 10 minutes without a field goal.

The scoring drought was too much to overcome as Texas A&M-Kingsville secured its first winning season in eight years by beating the Zias 82-66 Wednesday in a Lone Star Conference South game in the Steinke Center.

Karen Grant led the Zias (9-19, 0-10 LSC South) with 11 points off the bench while Alex Ortiz added 10 points and three assists.

LaKeisha Jones paced the Javelinas (14-10, 4-5) with 22 points while Tammi Mitchell and Ursula Hill combined for 23 points off the bench.

The Zias hung around in the first half behind 6-of-13 shooting from 3-point range — sophomore guard Tori Northcutt’s 3-pointer ignited a 19-8 Zia run that gave the Zias a 26-22 lead — but ENMU went the final 4:32 of the half without a field goal.

The Javelinas kept up the defensive pressure to start the second half and held ENMU scoreless over the first 5:50.

Hill, a junior guard, connected on back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half to jumpstart the Javelinas’ offense while Jones scored 14 of her game-high total in the final 20 minutes.

In the 2000-01 season, Kingsville went 27-7 en route to advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
